Personally disliked Barcelona, it's been ruined by drunk British stag groups and with that comes the streets at night being littered with pick pockets, prostitutes and people selling drugs all over the place, as well as large groups of Africans hanging about everywhere. don't get your phone nicked there either, by the time you've reported it they'll have made 500 calls in an hour to premium numbers in the middle east costing you a fortune - speaking from personal experience here if you hadn't guessed. My taxi driver from the airport into the centre also spent the whole journey shouting at his brother on the phone, he then went on to tell me he's concerned as he thinks he's about to go and join ISIS.

Don't get me wrong the beach in the day is brilliant but hated the place at night and I love a night out on the town!!

As someone has pointed out already, go to Lisbon, people are actually friendly/helpful its about twice as cheap and if you get a taxi 20 mins out of the centre some of the beaches are superb, clean and a lot quieter.

Also enjoyed Porto in late January, in fact Portugal pisses all over Spain for me and I used to be a huge fan of Spain. The hospitality in Portugal wins hands down.

Bezzina, your girl is 12 now?

You'll have to bring the family over for dinner in four years time.

There are some good bars in Madrid. There are also some good bars in Barcelona. However, if you want my advice, go to Granada. There are some GREAT bars there, and the beer comes with free grub. There are also bars in the gypsy quarter where they will bash out flamenco for free fo you to enjoy while having a bevvy.

"My mate horse got his phoned nicked by a brass in barcelona."

Luckily that sentence is featured in the Collins English-Spanish Phrase Book.

Madrid is horrible. My daughter has lived there for 4 years. There are some decent sights in Madrid and a decent tube system but Barcelona is beautiful in comparison.

Lots to see and do: Zoo, Monjuic Olympic site (nice views of the city). The Piscina Municipal de Montjuïc will also be open - remember the diving in the 1992 games? Sagrada Familia decent too but go early.

Went to Barcelona for 5 days with Mrs P, Bezz son. Took the train to Sitges, and spent the day on the beach. Strange place, the beach was all families, the town was 100% gay. Blokes with handbar moustaches and leather shorts holding hands.

Re: Madrid or Barcelona (weekend away in July)
Barcelona for sure in my view by some distance. At that time of year Madrid is about 36 degrees and many have left the city to go away on holiday. Barcelona on the other hand will be perfect weather and you have the ability to spend a day at the beach in the Barceloneta area or nicer ones just outside the city.
